Description
Aprehend® is a new biopesticide that uses Beauveria bassiana, a natural fungal spore, in an oil-based spray formulation as a barrier in areas where bed bugs walk. When bed bugs cross the barrier, the spores stick to the bed bug’s legs and body and are carried back to the refuge (cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide) where they spread among the bed bug population by direct transfer. Bed bugs that come in contact with the spores are infected and die within 4 to 10 days). In this way, Aprehend® targets bed bugs inside and outside their shelters in a single application. The long-lasting spray residue maintains effective control for up to 3 months and can be used to prevent the establishment of bed bug populations in homes, hotels and public spaces as well as for the elimination of existing infestations.
DOES THE FUNGUS AFFECT HUMANS OR PETS?
No, Beauveria is specific to insects and will not infect humans or pets. The formulation is designed to stick the conidia to the surface where they are applied and will not remain airborne after spray application. There are no chemical toxins in the Aprehend® formulation.
The heat is undoubtedly very deadly and quickly kills bedbugs exposed to high temperatures, moreover, no residue is left after treatment. Sounds good, doesn’t it? However, there is a major weakness to this form of treatment; some areas of the house can be insulated from the heat, allowing bed bugs that are behind walls or at the bottom of furniture, where heat cannot travel easily, to escape. In addition, if a customer reintroduces bed bugs into their home, there are no barriers to prevent re-infection.
